What a county veterans service officer does
The job is to help veterans and their families claim what they have earned, without charging for the help. That covers VA disability compensation and pension claims, enrolling in VA health care, education benefits, burial and headstone benefits, and tracking down discharge papers that have gone missing.
They also administer the Nebraska Veterans Aid Fund — state money for emergencies, covering food, fuel, utilities, medical and dental care and housing costs for veterans and their dependants in temporary difficulty. It is not a loan and it is not repaid.
You do not need an appointment to ask a question, but you often need one to be seen. Many of these offices are one person covering a large area, and several cover three counties.
What to take with you
- Your DD-214 discharge papers if you have them. If you do not, the office can help you get a copy — that is part of the job.
- Photo identification.
- Marriage or death certificates if the claim is for a spouse or survivor.
- Any letters you have already had from the VA.
