History

Keya Paha County was established in 1884 and named after the Keya Paha River, a tributary of the Niobrara. The region was settled by ranchers and homesteaders who carved out lives in the Sandhills and river valleys. Springview, the county seat, became a civic and commercial center, known for its courthouse and community pride.

Outdoors — Camping, RV, Hunting & Fishing

Keya Paha County has no state park and no state recreation area, but it has the best public camping infrastructure of the northern tier — and the most useful dump station on the whole Niobrara corridor. The county is bounded by the Keya Paha River through the northeast and the Niobrara River along the entire southern line.

Springview Recreation Area — northeast edge of Springview, next to the golf course. Village of Springview, (402) 497-2901. Six designated camper pads with electrical hookups (amperage not published — call and ask), waste and dump facilities on site, and a restroom and shower building that is open summer months only — flag that for shoulder-season travel. Reservations by phone. Also on the grounds: picnic shelters, playground, ball diamond, basketball and tennis courts, a roping arena and a mud volleyball pit. Springview RV dump station — North Elm Street, Springview. Donation basis, with both rinse water and potable water. This is the single most useful dump station for anyone working the Niobrara corridor, and the nearest one to Boyd County as well.

Cub Creek Recreation Area — 8 miles west of Springview on Highway 12, Middle Niobrara NRD, 304 acres. Free primitive camping, pit toilets, no hookups and no dump station. The NRD lists drinking water; field reports do not mention it, so carry your own. Room for four or five smaller rigs; longest reported is 23 feet. Access is a quarter mile of dirt road with a two-to-six-inch center ridge — do not take a big fifth-wheel or a low-clearance tow vehicle down it. Open year round. Fishing for bluegill, channel catfish, crappie, largemouth bass and yellow perch.

Two different places share this name. The Cub Creek Recreation Area near Plymouth in Jefferson County is a completely different site 250 miles away, run by a different NRD. Some listings also file the Springview site under Brown County — it is in Keya Paha.

Springview City Park, 122 S. Ash — splash pad from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends, playground, restrooms and picnic shelters. Day use, no camping.

The Niobrara Valley Preserve. The Nature Conservancy’s 56,000-acre preserve spans Keya Paha and Brown counties. Bluffs rise 400 feet above the north bank; more than 580 plant species and over 500 bison in two pastures. There is a visitor center and two hiking trails, one running roughly three miles along the canyon rim. This is a genuine biological crossroads, where eastern deciduous, northern boreal and western coniferous communities all meet Sandhills prairie.

Floating the Niobrara. The designated 76-mile National Scenic River reach runs from the Borman Bridge east of Valentine down to Nebraska Highway 137 at Norden — so the upper part of Keya Paha’s south line is federally designated water. Downstream of Highway 137 it is not. The outfitters Springview lists — Rock Barn, Rocky Ford and Sunny Brook Camp — are upstream Cherry County operations at Sparks and Valentine serving the popular float reach.

Hunting. Thomas Creek WMA (1,154.50 acres) is by far the largest public tract in the county; Holt Creek WMA adds 159.30 acres, and Cub Creek Recreation Area (304 acres) permits hunting. Beyond that it is Open Fields and Waters walk-in — check the current-year Public Access Atlas. Springview promotes white-tailed and mule deer and wild turkey in the Niobrara and Keya Paha valleys, with local outfitters running guided hunts; sharp-tailed grouse and greater prairie-chicken hold the grassland.

Fishing. Cub Creek Reservoir is the practical public water. The Niobrara holds channel catfish, sauger and carp but access is private except at designated points; the Keya Paha River has no published public fishing access at all.

Keya Paha County at a Glance

Keya Paha County, Nebraska — created in December 1884 when Brown County voters chose to cut off everything north of the Niobrara River. The name is Dakota: Ké-ya Pa-há, turtle hill, for the small rounded hills that read like giant turtle shells. County seat Springview, which won a contested election on 24 March 1885 and was named for a spring in the northwest corner of the townsite — a spring that has since dried up. No railroad was ever built into the county, which is much of the reason it stayed as empty as it did. 96 listings across 4 towns.

Getting there: Highway 12 runs the length of the county. The Cowboy Trail does not enter Keya Paha County — nearest access is Bassett or Newport in Rock County, about 25 miles south across the Niobrara.

For visitors: low rolling turtle hills and center-pivot tableland on top, dropping into spectacular Niobrara canyon country along the south edge. The Nature Conservancy’s 56,000-acre Niobrara Valley Preserve and its bison herd, the Norden Dance Hall (built 1929) and a barn dance held every summer since 1900, and the free primitive camping at Cub Creek. Springview’s donation-basis dump station on North Elm Street is the one every RV traveler on this corridor should know about. The county is 100 percent rural.
