History

Thurston County was established in 1889 and named after U.S. Senator John M. Thurston. It is unique in Nebraska because nearly all of its land lies within two sovereign Native nations: the Omaha Reservation and the Winnebago Reservation. These communities shaped the region long before statehood and continue to define its cultural and civic identity. Pender, founded in the late 19th century, became the county seat and developed as a regional service center. Walthill, Macy, Rosalie, and Winnebago grew as important cultural and community hubs.

The honest position: Thurston County has no state park, no state recreation area, no state wildlife management area and no NRD recreation area, and Game and Parks lists no public fishing water in the county. That is not an oversight. The entire county lies within the Omaha and Winnebago reservations, and the land is tribal or allotted — access runs through the tribes rather than through the state.

Anyone planning to hunt, fish or camp on tribal land should contact the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska at Macy or the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska at Winnebago directly. Tribal permits and rules apply, and they are not the same as state permits.

Camping and RV

Rigs to about 36 feet. ⚠️ Site count is reported variously as 14 full-hookup plus four primitive, or around 30 — confirm when booking.

It is free to Blue Ox customers while their product is being serviced, and reportedly free to Winnebago and Escapees club members; others pay around $15–$17 a night. The welcome center is open weekdays, and there are factory tours at 10.30 and 14.30.

⚠️ One trap worth naming: the “Pender dump” listed on the village services page is a municipal solid-waste dump, not an RV sanitary dump station. Several aggregator sites conflate the two. Because Blue Ox sites are full-hookup, no separate dump station is advertised there — check when you book.

The Missouri River

The river forms the county’s eastern boundary, but no public boat ramp in Thurston County could be confirmed — which follows from the land ownership. The nearest confirmed public river access is downstream in Burt County or upstream at Dixon County’s Ponca State Park.

Worth knowing

Thurston County is one of very few counties in the United States lying entirely within tribal land. Macy is the seat of the Omaha Tribe and Winnebago of the Winnebago Tribe. The Omaha Tribe’s annual Hethu’shka powwow in August is among the oldest continuously held powwows in North America, and the Winnebago Tribe holds its annual powwow in July. Both are public events; visitors are welcome and should follow the posted etiquette.
