About Cass County

Cass County lies south of the Platte River, which forms its northern border, with the Missouri River on the east. Lewis and Clark reached the mouth of the Platte on July 21, 1804. Plattsmouth, at that mouth, became the county seat in 1855 and the Burlington's Nebraska headquarters in 1869–70; Rock Bluff in 1861 and Weeping Water in 1875 and 1878 tried and failed to take the seat. Weeping Water Creek crosses the county to the Missouri, and the limestone along it made Weeping Water "Stone City."

Railroads placed most of the towns: the Burlington through Cedar Creek, Louisville, South Bend and Greenwood in 1869–70; the Missouri Pacific through Weeping Water, Manley and Avoca in 1881–82, through Elmwood, Eagle and Wabash in 1886 and through Union and Murray about 1890–91; and the Rock Island through Murdock and Alvo about 1890–91. The county's 1890 population of 24,080 was not passed again until recent decades. Today about half its people live outside the towns, and the north end is part of the Omaha metro area.
