Union, Nebraska
Union is a village in Cass County, Nebraska, organized in 1892, with a population of 195 at the 2020 census. Settlement in the area dates to 1855, and the loose collection of homes was informally known as "Stringtown" in the 1880s before the village took shape.
History
Union’s name is generally traced to the junction ("union") of two Missouri Pacific rail lines that met there around 1890, though a local tradition also credits a more patriotic naming. The village’s first store opened in 1887, and by 1893 eight passenger trains a day were passing through. At its height, Union supported three general stores, hardware and furniture shops, and two grain elevators, and published its first newspaper in 1888. The village’s 1907 girls’ basketball team won a state championship, and Union was also home to Harry Smith, who went on to play Major League Baseball.
