About Nemaha County

Nemaha County lies on the Missouri River in the southeastern corner of Nebraska, crossed by the Little Nemaha River. Its southeastern part was the Nemaha Half-Breed Reservation, set aside by an 1830 treaty, where St. Deroin became the county's first town in 1853–54. It began as Forney County, named for John W. Forney, and took the name Nemaha in 1855, with Brownville as county seat. Brownville grew into one of the largest towns in the territory, with the first telegraph into Nebraska (1860) and the U.S. Land Office, and Peru gained the state's first state-supported college in 1867.

The railroads remade the map. The Missouri Pacific and the Burlington founded or moved Auburn, Brock, Johnson, Julian, Howe and Glenrock in 1879–82, while the river towns of Aspinwall and St. Deroin faded. Sheridan and Calvert merged as Auburn in 1882 and took the county seat in 1883. The county counted 14,952 people in 1900. Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville has produced power since 1974.
