Aspinwall was first settled in 1853 as a Missouri River steamboat landing, and by 1864 the settlement reportedly counted around 500 residents who boasted of having the best steamboat landing on the river. A post office opened in 1860, but the town’s fortunes faded with the decline of river traffic, and that post office closed for good in 1903.

Nothing of the settlement remains today beyond the Aspinwall Cemetery and the name of Aspinwall Precinct, one of Nemaha County’s 13 civil townships — a reminder of a once-bustling river landing rather than a living town.
