Shubert is a village in Richardson County, in the far southeastern corner of Nebraska. It was platted in 1883 and named in honor of Henry W. Shubert, who lived from 1834 to 1909 and was one of the early settlers of the county. The 2020 census counted 163 residents, up a little from 150 in 2010 but well below the 252 recorded in 2000.
Shubert is the mailing address for Indian Cave State Park, which lies about six miles northeast of the village on the bluffs of the Missouri River. The park takes in 3,052 rugged acres and is named for the large sandstone cave within it, where prehistoric Native American petroglyphs can be seen from an accessible boardwalk with seating, information signs and a viewing deck.
The park has 22 miles of hiking and biking trails and 16 miles of equestrian trails, campgrounds at Ash Grove and Hackberry Hollow with showers and modern restrooms, and a concrete boat ramp giving access to the Missouri. It also holds the restored schoolhouse and general store from St. Deroin, an old river town, where old time crafts are demonstrated during living history weekends. Children from Shubert attend Humboldt Table Rock Steinauer Public Schools.
