About Dawson
Dawson is a village in Richardson County, Nebraska. U.S. Highway 75 runs straight through it as Ridge Street, past a number of old buildings. The Big Nemaha River passes just south of town and draws people who fish. The 2020 census counted 148 residents. The village covers about a fifth of a square mile at an elevation of 968 feet.
History
The town was platted in 1872, the year the Atchison and Nebraska Railroad was extended to the site. It was first known as Noraville, but residents insisted on calling their town Dawson, after Joshua Dawson, an early settler, and that name is the one that stuck.
Park and schools
A small park sits at the corner of 7th and Ridge Street, with a picnic shelter, a merry-go-round, a basketball hoop, a slide, bouncy horses and a water hydrant. Children in the village attend Humboldt Table Rock Steinauer Public Schools. Dawson had its own district, Dawson-Verdon Public Schools, until 2004.
