About Table Rock

Table Rock is a village of 233 in northeastern Pawnee County on NE 4, where NE 65 ends, about 6 miles north-northeast of Pawnee City. Its five-acre public square, dedicated in 1882 with a bandstand added in 1900, is the heart of a National Register historic district, and the Table Rock Historical Society runs nine museums in town.

History

The Table Rock Town Company chose the site in 1855 and named it for a large flat-topped rock on high ground near the village, which has since fallen. In 1857 the Nebraska Settlement Company took over and brought about 200 families from Pennsylvania and New York, but wet weather, hard times and illness in 1858 left only about 15 of 150 families; the town was surveyed that year. The first church in the county was organized here in 1857, and a stone schoolhouse was built in 1861–62.

The first Atchison & Nebraska locomotive, on the line that became part of the Burlington, reached Table Rock on November 10, 1871, and the Burlington's line to Wymore followed in 1881. The State Bank of Table Rock was founded in 1885, merchant G. R. "Rice" Martin built the opera house in 1893, and the population peaked at 852 in 1900. Football Hall of Famer William "Link" Lyman came from Table Rock. Its schools merged with Humboldt's in 2003, and the Table Rock school building closed in 2016.
