About Burchard
Burchard is a village of 76 in western Pawnee County on NE 99, about 11 miles west of Pawnee City. Harold Lloyd was born here in 1893, and his birthplace is a small museum; Burchard Lake, 3 miles east, draws anglers and, each spring, visitors to its prairie-chicken blinds.
History
The Lincoln Town Site Company laid out Burchard in August 1881 as the Burlington's Republican Valley line to Wymore came through, and named it for a local minister named Burchard. By 1882 it had more than 100 people, six stores, a Presbyterian church nearing completion and a school, and it was incorporated in 1884. The population peaked at 315 in 1910.
Harold Lloyd, the silent-film comedian of Safety Last!, was born here on April 20, 1893, in a frame house built in 1883 that his father bought in 1890; the family moved to Humboldt in 1897. The house was listed on the National Register in 1993. Notable people from Burchard also include actor Gaylord Lloyd, Harold's brother, and Gen. Charles H. Corlett.
