About Lewiston
Lewiston is a village in Pawnee County. The 2020 census counted 54 residents, down from 68 in 2010 and 86 in 2000. The village covers about 0.10 square miles. Pawnee County material places it 23.5 miles north-west of Pawnee City by way of Highways 8, 99 and 4, between Beatrice and Pawnee City. The village keeps a park with playground equipment.
History
Lewiston was platted in 1886, when the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad was extended to that point. County material credits the founding to Ford Lewis, who came to Nebraska from Illinois in 1867, and says the town is named for him. A hardware store and a blacksmith shop were among the first businesses, followed by a Baptist church and a Methodist church. By 1930, the village's peak, there were about 168 residents.
School
A school building for grades one through ten went up in 1903, and a school covering kindergarten through twelfth grade opened in 1918. Fire destroyed the school in 1967 and residents rebuilt it within a year. A building for athletics, art and music opened in 1985.

Lewiston was platted in 1886 when the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad was extended to the site, in an area historically known as Turkey Creek precinct. Its exact name origin is genuinely unresolved — the 1925 reference work Nebraska Place-Names hedges that it was "probably directly or indirectly named for Lewiston, Maine, though possibly for a local resident." A small, steadily shrinking railroad-era village in the county's northwest corner, Lewiston remains an incorporated community with its own village government.
