Peru State College is a public four-year college in the Nebraska State College System. It began as Mount Vernon School in 1865 and became the state's first teachers college in 1867, making it Nebraska's oldest institution of higher education. The wooded campus on the Missouri River bluffs is known as the "Campus of a Thousand Oaks," and the Steamboat Trace Trail passes through town.
