Pierce County (license plate #40) is located in northeast Nebraska, covering 574 square miles of rolling farmland, creek drainages, and small towns connected by US-20 and NE-13. The county seat is the City of Pierce. Pierce County is bordered by Knox County (north), Wayne County (east), Stanton County (southeast), Madison County (south), and Antelope County (west).

US-20 runs east-west across the northern portion of the county through Plainview and Osmond. NE-13 runs north-south through the county connecting Pierce with Hadar and Norfolk (Madison County) to the south and Foster to the north.

History

Pierce County and the city that shares its name are both named for Franklin Pierce, the fourteenth president. The county was created by the territorial legislature in the 1850s, though the exact year is genuinely disputed: the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries and History Nebraska both place it at 26 January 1856, while the county itself, the Nebraska Association of County Officials and most local histories say 1859. What is not in doubt is the organization date — the county was fully organized on 26 July 1870, and Pierce was named county seat at that first election.

The first settlers were German families, many of them Lutherans arriving by way of Wisconsin, who moved up the North Fork of the Elkhorn in the second half of the 1860s. James Brown’s cabin on Willow Creek served as hotel, post office and temporary county office; the site was chosen partly because it sat near the middle of the county. The town plat, fifty-six blocks, was filed on 4 May 1871, and the village incorporated on 24 May 1883. Unusually for a Nebraska county, Pierce never had a county-seat fight — the seat has never moved.

The Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad reached Plainview in 1880 and set the pattern for the rest of the county: Plainview and Foster were both platted on 27 October 1880, Hadar in June 1883, Osmond in May 1890 and McLean in 1900. Three courthouses have served the county: a $4,000 frame building of 1871, a $25,000 brick replacement a block north that stood until 1974, and the present complex, built from 1974 with federal revenue sharing rather than new local taxes.

Geography

Pierce County covers 575 square miles in northeast Nebraska, of which only about 1.3 square miles is water. The land is undulating to gently rolling prairie, roughly a tenth of it valley and bottomland, and close to ninety per cent of it is farmed — mostly corn and soybeans. Elevations run from around 1,500 feet in the southeast to roughly 1,750 in the northwest; the towns themselves sit between 1,585 feet at Pierce and 1,686 at Plainview.

The North Fork of the Elkhorn River runs south-eastward through the middle of the county in a valley two to five miles wide. Dry Fork drains the lower western side and Willow Creek passes Pierce itself. All of it belongs to the Elkhorn, and through it the Platte and the Missouri. The county borders Knox County to the north, Cedar County to the north-east, Wayne County to the east, Stanton County to the south-east, Madison County to the south and Antelope County to the west. The county grew to its present size in 1875, when a jog in its north-eastern corner was straightened by taking territory from Cedar County.

Culture & Landmarks

Plainview calls itself the Klown Kapital and backs the claim up with a June Klown Festival and a Klown Doll Museum holding more than 4,500 pieces. The town began life as Roseville, named for its first postmaster Charles Rose, and was renamed in 1874 after Plainview, Minnesota. Hadar takes its name from the German Hader, a quarrel, and commemorates the settling of a dispute between two early settlers.

Pierce drew international attention in September 2013 with the Lambrecht Chevrolet auction, when roughly five hundred largely unsold, low-mileage dealership vehicles that had accumulated since the 1950s were finally sold off. Gilman Park at Pierce occupies the site of the 1878 mill dam — washed out by flood in 1924, rebuilt in 1936 — and now holds an arboretum and a lake built in 1970.

Notable Communities

Pierce is the county seat and largest town. Plainview is the regional hub for the northern half of the county, on US-20. Osmond sits near the Knox County line; its name origin is genuinely unsettled, with one account calling it a railway official’s name and another crediting the Pacific Short Line engineers who laid it out. Hadar, Foster, McLean, Breslau and Wee Town complete the county.

Two people were genuinely born here: Ben Sasse, United States Senator for Nebraska and later president of the University of Florida, born at Plainview on 22 February 1972 though raised in Fremont; and Arthur L. Miller, congressman for Nebraska’s fourth district from 1943 to 1959, born on a farm near Plainview on 24 May 1892.

Economy & Agriculture

Pierce County is entirely rural by census definition and sits inside the Norfolk micropolitan area. Farming dominates — corn, soybeans and livestock across about ninety per cent of the land — and the grain elevators at each town remain the tallest structures for miles. S. F. Gilman’s flour mill, built at Pierce in 1880 and shipping on the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley line, was the county’s first real industry.

Outdoors — Camping, RV, Hunting & Fishing

Pierce County is a one-destination outdoor county, and the destination is a good one. Willow Creek State Recreation Area, a mile and a half south-west of Pierce at 54876 852 Road, is the only state area in the county — 1,633 acres of ground around a 700-acre reservoir. Park office: (402) 329-4053.

Camping and RV

Willow Way Campground has sites with 20/30-amp electric, and Electric Plus sites adding either a dedicated water hookup or a 50-amp connection, alongside basic sites. There are modern restrooms, showers and — unusual for a state recreation area — laundry. A separate equestrian area, Lakeside Corrals, offers ten Electric Plus sites on 100-foot pads with 50-amp service and 50-foot pens, which makes it genuinely big-rig friendly. Reservations open 180 days ahead.

Plan your dump stop before you arrive. Nebraska Game and Parks lists a dump and fill station among the park’s amenities, but it is not at the campground — it sits in the town of Pierce, next to the county courthouse. Arriving with full tanks expecting to empty them on site is the single most common mistake here.

A park entry permit is required on top of camping fees. Shower and water buildings may be winterised outside the main season; ring the park before a cold-weather trip.

Fishing

Willow Creek Reservoir holds crappie, bluegill, bass, catfish, walleye, northern pike and wipers, and Game and Parks rates it among the state’s better waters for white bass over fifteen inches. Seven rock jetties give bank anglers real access. The main body is open to all boating including water skiing; the wooded west end, about half the surface, is no-wake. There is a swimming beach on the south-central shore. A fishing permit and a park entry permit are both needed.

Hunting

Parts of Willow Creek SRA are open to hunting from the first Tuesday after Labor Day through 1 April, for pheasant, quail, dove, rabbit, squirrel and waterfowl. Deer are archery only at the recreation area — a firearm deer hunter would be in violation. Elsewhere the county is farm ground, and access means asking. Note that US-81, just west, is a regulatory boundary for prairie grouse, so check which side of it you are on.

Trails

An eight-mile limestone hike and bike trail runs through the recreation area, with a two-mile spur into the town of Pierce — campers can ride in for a meal without moving the vehicle. A ten-mile mowed horse trail serves the equestrian campground. There is also an archery range and a disc golf course, and six picnic shelters, two of them with power.

Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park, with its intact rhino, horse and camel skeletons in volcanic ash, is a short drive west near Royal — but it is in Antelope County, not Pierce.

Events

The Pierce County Fair, held at the Pierce County Fairgrounds, is the fixed point of the local calendar, and every town adds its own: Plainview’s Klown Days Festival in June is the best known beyond the county line, and the Klown Doll Museum is open year round. Pierce holds the Old Time Threshers Bee.

US-20 Corridor (east-west, northern Pierce County)

US-20 is the primary travel corridor across northern Pierce County, passing through Plainview and Osmond before crossing into Wayne County to the east and Antelope County to the west.
