Breslau, Nebraska
Breslau is a small unincorporated community in Pierce County, Nebraska, located on US Highway 20 approximately equidistant between Plainview and Osmond, at the corner of 541st Avenue. Positioned along one of Nebraska's great east-west travel routes, Breslau is a quiet agricultural stop on the northern tier of Pierce County.
The community's name carries a piece of European history: Breslau was the German name for what is now Wrocław, Poland — a major city in Lower Silesia. Like many Nebraska communities named by German and Central European immigrants in the late 19th century, Breslau reflects the heritage of the settlers who homesteaded this corner of the Great Plains.
History
Breslau got its start following construction of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad through northern Pierce County in the 1880s. The railroad opened the northern tier of Nebraska to rapid agricultural settlement, and small communities like Breslau emerged as gathering points for farmers and ranchers along the line.
The community was named by German-speaking settlers who sought to honor their European homeland, a pattern seen throughout the Nebraska sandhills and prairie counties. Though Breslau never grew into an incorporated village, it maintained a community identity tied to the surrounding farmsteads and the US-20 corridor.
