History

Hall County was established in 1858 and named after Augustus Hall, Chief Justice of the Nebraska Territory. Grand Island, the county seat, was founded by German settlers and became a major railroad and agricultural center. Hall County, Nebraska — established 4 November 1858 and named for Augustus Hall, Chief Justice of the Territorial Supreme Court. County seat Grand Island, founded on 4 July 1857 by about thirty-five German immigrants from Schleswig-Holstein, backed by investors from Davenport, Iowa; the Union Pacific arrived in 1866 and laid out “Grand Island Station” two years later. Unusually for Nebraska, no county-seat fight is recorded — Grand Island has held it from the beginning. The county has grown at every single census, reaching a peak of 62,895 in 2020 and about 63,600 today, making it Nebraska’s fourth most populous. 554 listings across 5 towns.

Getting there: Interstate 80 runs along the south with exits at Alda, US-281 and 318; US-30 — the Lincoln Highway — runs through Wood River, Alda and Grand Island; plus US-34, US-281, NE-2 and NE-11. Union Pacific main line, with BNSF running north and south. Central Time.

For visitors: the Nebraska State Fair has been held at Fonner Park since 2010 — the 2026 fair runs 28 August to 7 September, and 334,383 people came in 2025. The Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer, itself on the National Register, opens its Railroad Town from 1 May to 15 September. And this is crane country: the Crane Trust Nature & Visitor Center at Wood River protects nearly 10,000 acres of Platte River habitat, with a free visitor center and guided blind, bus and footbridge tours in season, while the Alda Crane Viewing Deck is free and accessible year round. The county holds 28 National Register listings, the most in central Nebraska, including a surviving Lincoln Highway Seedling Mile.

Tornado country. Hall County has the highest density of tornado activity in Nebraska, roughly four times the state average. On the night of 3 June 1980 a near-stationary supercell put seven tornadoes over Grand Island in about three hours — the strongest an F4, five people killed, two hundred injured, and three of the seven rotating clockwise, which is genuinely rare. The debris was piled into what the city still calls Tornado Hill. Ivy Ruckman’s novel Night of the Twisters came out of it.

Born here: Henry Fonda, on 16 May 1905 — Omaha claims him, but Omaha raised him; he was born here and the family moved when he was one. Also the Abbott sisters, who deserve to be better known: Edith Abbott (1876), the first woman to be dean of an American graduate school, and Grace Abbott (1878), who ran the U.S. Children’s Bureau and fought child labour — between them they helped draft the Social Security Act.
