About Doniphan
Doniphan is a village in Hall County, in central Nebraska. It covers about 0.51 square miles. The 2020 census counted 809 residents, which makes it one of the larger villages in the county. It lies roughly twelve miles from both Grand Island and Hastings. Doniphan-Trumbull School serves the community.
History
W. J. Burger settled here in 1864 and kept a post office at his house in the 1870s, when the place was called Orchard. Burger platted the town in 1879, after the St Joseph and Grand Island railroad began running. It was named for Colonel John Doniphan of St Joseph, Missouri, an attorney for that railroad. Doniphan was incorporated as a village on 9 January 1884, governed by a board of five trustees.
Early business
The Upson Brothers opened a store in August 1879. A livery stable, a blacksmith shop, grain elevators and a flouring mill followed, the mill in 1881. A newspaper, The Index, began publishing in April 1881. By the early 1900s the town had two banks along with hotels, stores and service trades.

Doniphan was platted in 1879 by pioneer William J. Burger as a midway point between Hastings and Grand Island along the St. Joseph and Grand Island Railroad, and was incorporated in 1884. The town takes its name from Col. John Doniphan, a St. Joseph, Missouri attorney for the railroad. Doniphan is home to Doniphan-Trumbull School, serving grades 7-12, and is part of the Grand Island metropolitan area.
