Alda was first settled in 1859 and relocated to its present site along the railroad in 1873. According to local tradition, the town takes its name from the first white child born within its borders. Alda is home to Merrick Machine Company, a manufacturer founded in the village in 1960, and carries the motto "Working Together For A Brighter Future." It is part of the Grand Island Micropolitan Statistical Area.
