Railroad History

O'Neill was a significant railroad junction town, served by two separate railroads:

  • The Cowboy Line — the Chicago and North Western (C&NW) line ran from Norfolk west through Stafford to Valentine and Chadron. The right-of-way of this line is now the Cowboy Trail, Nebraska's premier rail-trail. Stafford, 14 miles east of O'Neill, was a stop on this line.
  • The Sioux City Line — Built in 1891 as the Sioux City, O'Neill & Western Railway, this line runs about 120 miles west from the Sioux City area across northeast Nebraska to O'Neill. It later became part of the Great Northern and then Burlington Northern, was run by the Nebraska Northeastern Railway from 1996, and was bought back by BNSF in 2012. It is still an active line today, carrying mostly grain and ethanol traffic.

Having two distinct railroad lines made O'Neill one of the more connected towns in northern Nebraska during the rail era. The C&NW line was later abandoned and became the Cowboy Trail, while the Sioux City line is still in service.

About O'Neill

O'Neill is the county seat of Holt County and its largest town, where US 20, US 275 and US 281 meet in north-central Nebraska. The Cowboy Trail runs through town, and Carney Park at US 281 has camping. Avera St. Anthony's Hospital, motels and restaurants make it the service center for the county.

History

Civil engineer Thomas J. Atwood platted the town as Holt City. Gen. John O'Neill's first Irish colonists arrived on May 12, 1874, and a week later moved into the sod "Grand Central Hotel." The town took the general's name. John O'Neill, a Fenian leader born in County Monaghan, Ireland, died in Omaha in 1878.

The Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad (later the Chicago & North Western) reached O'Neill in 1881. Two years earlier, on May 12, 1879, O'Neill won the county seat from Paddock with 279 of 391 votes, and the courthouse was built in 1885.

In 1969 the Governor proclaimed O'Neill the Irish Capital of Nebraska. A giant shamrock is painted at 4th and Douglas streets for the St. Patrick's Day parade; it was made permanent in 2000 and is repainted every year. A statue of General O'Neill was dedicated in 2022.
