About Ewing
Ewing is a village of 373 on US 275 in southeastern Holt County, at the forks of the Elkhorn River, 21 miles southeast of O'Neill. The Cowboy Trail runs through town, and the city park allows camping.
History
James Ewing of Tennessee settled in May 1870 just below the forks of the Elkhorn, and Yost calls his the county's first settlement. A post office opened on January 22, 1874, and took his name. The Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad (later the Chicago & North Western) arrived in 1881, and the Pioneer Town Site Company platted the town around 1881–82. Ewing's population peaked at 705 in 1950. The water tower, built in 1908 by Lee Spittler, is still in use.
On May 7, 1911, Ewing's Savidge brothers made the first public flight of the airplane they had built, one of the first in Nebraska. Matt Savidge was killed in a crash in 1916. A state historical marker at US 275 and S. Spruce St. tells their story.
