The Golden Hotel is O’Neill’s landmark historic hotel, built by Thomas Valentine Golden and opened in May 1913. The four-story brick building at the corner of Douglas and 4th Streets was described at opening as “one of the finest hotels in northern Nebraska.” T.V. Golden (1854–1928) was O’Neill’s most prominent citizen and civic builder for over four decades — attorney, banker, irrigation advocate, mayor, and the driving force behind the city’s infrastructure and growth from 1883 onward.
The Golden Hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, recognized in part for its “contribution to the continued economic and commercial development” of O’Neill. The hotel stands as the most visible legacy of the Golden family’s central role in building the Irish Capital of Nebraska.
Golden Township in Holt County is also named in T.V. Golden’s honor; Stafford and Ewing are among the communities within Golden Township.
