About Rock County

Rock County runs from the Niobrara River on the north, part of the Niobrara National Scenic River, south across hay meadows and Sandhills lakes into deep ranch country. US 20, the Cowboy Trail and the old railroad cross the north of the county through its two incorporated towns: Bassett, the county seat, and Newport. Rose is a crossroads on US 183 in the south; Duff, Mariaville and Sybrant were ranch-country post offices. The county borders Keya Paha County on the north, Boyd on the northeast, Holt on the east, Loup on the south and Brown on the west.

The land was part of Brown County until a petition of August 1, 1888, led voters to approve a new county called Rock on November 6, 1888. Bassett led Newport, Thurman, Tracy and Rock Center for the county seat, and a special election on January 29, 1889, made it permanent. The railroad had come through in 1883–84, and Newport became one of the largest hay-shipping points in the world. A prairie fire in March 1904 burned more than 40 miles across the county. The present courthouse was built in 1939–40 with WPA help. The population peaked at 3,977 in 1940. The railroad was abandoned in 1992 and became the Cowboy Trail. The March 2019 flood damaged the Carns Bridge and the NE 137 river landing. On August 10, 2026, the state renumbered the road north of Bassett as US 183; NE 7 no longer enters the county.

The National Register Rock County Courthouse and Bassett Lodge & Range Cafe and the five-building Rock County Historical Society Museum in Bassett; Spring Valley Park near Newport, called Nebraska’s first roadside rest area, with History Nebraska marker 106; the Cowboy Trail across the county; and the Carns State Aid Bridge on the Keya Paha County line.

Outdoors

Rock County has no state park or state recreation area. Camp at the Rock County Fairgrounds in Bassett, with about 30 electric sites (30 and 50 amp), showers and a dump station, (402) 684-3338; it fills during fair week. Fred Thomas WMA (218 acres), 11½ miles north of Bassett on US 183 at the Niobrara bridge, has a river lookout and primitive camping without fires; a lightly maintained river access is at the north end of the bridge. The NE 137 landing north of Newport is the last landing on the National Scenic River; it was damaged in 2019, so check before you go. The Nick Lyman WMA (formerly Twin Lakes, 703 acres), about 18 miles south of Bassett, has deer, grouse and waterfowl hunting. Golf at the 9-hole Bassett Country Club.
