History

Rock County was established in 1888 during the settlement of north‑central Nebraska. The county was named for the rocky character of its soil, which shaped early homesteading and ranching patterns. Bassett, founded along the railroad, became the county seat and a key service center for ranchers and travelers.

Rock County has no state park and no state recreation area. There is one practical developed campground, at the fairgrounds in Bassett. The county’s outdoor value is the Niobrara River, the Sandhills lake WMAs and the Cowboy Trail.

Camping and RV

Rock County Fairgrounds campground, Reynolds Street, Bassett, on West Highway 20 — and 0.6 miles from the Cowboy Trail. (402) 684-3338. About 30 electrical pedestals at 30 and 50 amp in two rows on grass. Dump station on site. Water hydrants around the grounds rather than at individual sites, and a bathhouse with showers near the entrance, with a swimming pool alongside.

Typically free to about $10 a night in a donation box, no reservations, open year round — but heavily used during the county fair and rodeo, so check before relying on it in fair week. Rigs to about 35 feet. Two honest caveats from campers: it sits at the US-20 and US-183 junction and gets truck noise, and it can produce burrs and flies in season.

Spring Valley Park at Newport appears on Cowboy Trail lists, but the most recent report found the water shut off and the restrooms locked. Phone ahead before sending an RV there.

Fred Thomas WMA, on the south bank of the Niobrara at the Highway 7 bridge north of Bassett, allows primitive camping but no open campfires. There is a free canoe and small-boat launch with parking at the Highway 7 landing — note that getting a boat up from the river is a two-person job.

Fishing and paddling

The Niobrara along the northern edge is the county’s river, with the Highway 7 landing as the public access point. Sandhills lakes on the WMAs to the south give bluegill, bass, perch and pike. No park entry permit applies anywhere in the county — there is no state area — just a fishing permit.

Hunting and the trail

Deer along the Niobrara breaks, turkey in the river timber, and sharp-tailed grouse and greater prairie-chicken in the Sandhills — this is some of the better grouse country in the state. Open Fields and Waters tracts change annually.

The Cowboy Trail runs the width of the county through Bassett and Newport on the old railroad grade.
