Rose is a tiny unincorporated community in Rock County, Nebraska, on the east side of U.S. Route 183 in the county's rolling sandhill country. It's a hamlet in the truest sense -- by 2015 only two houses remained standing -- named simply for the wild rose bushes that grew near the town site.
Rose sits in west-central Rock County, a few miles east-southeast of its close neighbor Duff. The community never grew large; its post office operated for only three years, and today Rose is one of the smallest surviving named places on the map in this stretch of the Nebraska Sandhills.
History
Rose took its name from the wild rose bushes growing near the original town site. A post office was established in 1905 and discontinued in 1908, a brief three-year run that suggests the community never developed much beyond a rural crossroads. Like many small Sandhills communities, Rose has shrunk steadily since; by 2015 it consisted of only two residences.
