About Nebraska City

Nebraska City is the seat of Otoe County, a city of 7,222 on the west bank of the Missouri River, about 45 miles east-southeast of Lincoln and 23 miles south of Plattsmouth. J. Sterling Morton founded Arbor Day here, and his estate, Arbor Lodge, and Arbor Day Farm draw visitors all year. The city has the Otoe County Courthouse, CHI Health St. Mary's hospital and the Morton-James Public Library, and NE 2 crosses the Missouri here to Iowa.

History

Lewis and Clark camped near the site on July 18, 1804. In April 1846 Army dragoons built a blockhouse at Table Creek, the first Fort Kearny, and the garrison moved west to the Platte in 1848. John Boulware ran a ferry and in 1852 built a ferry house, the county's first permanent home; the Table Creek post office opened that year and was renamed Nebraska City in 1854, when Stephen Nuckolls and partners laid out the town. The territorial legislature incorporated it in 1855, and the neighboring towns of Kearney City, South Nebraska City and Prairie City were merged into it in 1857–58.

Nebraska City boomed as a river and freighting town. Russell, Majors & Waddell began freighting from here in 1858 to supply the Army's western posts, and its office now houses the Old Freighters Museum. J. Sterling Morton, who arrived in 1855, proposed a tree-planting day, and the first Arbor Day, April 10, 1872, saw about a million trees planted; his family gave Arbor Lodge to the state in 1923. The Midland Pacific line to Lincoln opened in 1871, and the city counted 11,941 people in 1890.

The Otoe County Courthouse of 1864–65 is called the oldest public building in Nebraska. John Kagi helped John Brown move freedom seekers through the Mayhew Cabin in 1859, the first Nebraska site in the National Park Service's Network to Freedom. The Waubonsie Bridge of 1930 gave the city its first highway crossing of the Missouri; the present Nebraska City Bridge opened in 1986. The 2019 flood closed the bridge for months and kept the Mayhew Cabin closed until June 2026.
