Arbor Lodge State Historical Park at 2600 Arbor Ave. in Nebraska City preserves the 52-room mansion of J. Sterling and Caroline Morton, whose first house on the site was built in 1855. J. Sterling Morton founded Arbor Day, first celebrated in Nebraska in 1872 with nearly a million trees planted, and their son Joy founded Morton Salt.
The mansion keeps original furnishings, photographs and artifacts, and the 72-acre park has gardens, walking paths and an arboretum. Seasonal events include Halloween candlelight tours, teas and history tours; check the Arbor Day Farm calendar for dates.
