Otoe is a village originally platted in 1880 as "Berlin" by its German Lutheran settler community, along the proposed Missouri Pacific Railroad line from Kansas City to Omaha. The town was renamed Otoe on October 18, 1918, amid anti-German sentiment during World War I after a series of fires damaged its main street. Incorporated as a village in 1896, Otoe survived an Easter Sunday 1913 tornado that destroyed most of its business district, and today operates a K-8 elementary school, a volunteer fire department, and hosts an annual community barbecue each September.
