About Camp Creek
Camp Creek is a rural community in eastern Otoe County, about 8 miles south-southeast of Nebraska City and 2 miles west of the Missouri River, named for the Native bands that camped along the creek. It was never a town. The map point is approximate.
History
Preaching began here before 1857; the first service on the creek bank was held in June 1857, a Sabbath school started that July, and a frame meeting house went up in 1858. The Camp Creek Congregational Church was organized on April 26, 1868, with 27 members and built a $2,700 brick church that year; that church no longer stands. A Camp Creek post office ran from 1875 to 1879.
Land for the cemetery was given in 1866, and the first burial was that October; the chapel was built in 1916–17. The Camp Creek Cemetery and Chapel was listed on the National Register in 2011. Nearby, the one-room Camp Creek School (District 54), 6903 Q Rd., which taught pupils until the mid-1980s, and Harmony School (District 53), 6265 Q Rd., are also on the Register.
