History
Dawson County was created in 1871 and named after Jacob Dawson, an early Nebraska settler and the first postmaster of Lincoln. Settlement expanded rapidly with the arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad, which established key stops across the county. Lexington, originally known as Plum Creek, became the county seat and an important transportation and agricultural hub.
The county’s early history includes the 1867 Plum Creek Massacre, a notable event during tensions between Native American tribes and westward expansion. Over time, Dawson County grew into one of Nebraska’s most productive agricultural regions, supported by irrigation from the Platte River and later by large‑scale meatpacking and manufacturing industries.

Dawson County at a Glance
Dawson County, Nebraska — created 11 January 1860 and organized 11 July 1871. The namesake is genuinely unsettled: the county’s own account credits Jacob Dawson, first postmaster of the settlement that became Lincoln, while other sources credit Congressman John Littleton Dawson of Pennsylvania. County seat Lexington, which has never moved — though the town was called Plum Creek until 1889, when residents voted to rename it after the Revolutionary War battle on the grounds that “Plum Creek” lacked metropolitan dignity. The first county election recorded thirteen votes. 437 listings across 8 towns.
Getting there: Interstate 80 with exits at Gothenburg, Cozad and Lexington, plus US-30, US-283 and NE-21, 23, 40 and 47. The Union Pacific Overland Route main line runs through — one of the busiest freight corridors in North America. Central Time.
A hard year. Tyson Foods announced in November 2025 that it would close the Lexington beef plant, and it shut permanently on 20 January 2026, ending about 3,200 jobs in a town of roughly ten thousand. The building opened as an Iowa Beef Packers plant in November 1990 and Tyson took it over in 2001 — thirty-five years of operation. The University of Nebraska’s Center for Agricultural Profitability puts the statewide effect at 7,003 jobs and $3.28 billion a year. That plant is why Lexington grew about 52 percent in the 1990s and passed ten thousand people for the first time, and why the town is 60 percent Hispanic or Latino today, with communities from Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Cuba, Somalia and Sudan. History Nebraska credits Lexington with seeding the same pattern in Crete, Dakota City, Grand Island, Hastings, Madison and Schuyler.
For visitors: Cozad sits almost exactly on the 100th meridian, the traditional line between humid and arid America, and says so on an arch across Highway 30. Gothenburg was founded in 1882 by Olof Bergström, a Swedish immigrant who recruited settlers on repeated trips home, and keeps the Midway Stage Station, on the National Register since 1969. The Robert Henri Museum occupies the old Hendee Hotel at Cozad. The Platte River crosses the middle of the county — this is the western end of the main central Platte crane roost.
An under-told story: from 1879, African Canadian families from Ontario homesteaded near Overton, many later moving on to the DeWitty settlement in the Sandhills.
Born here: Mick Tingelhoff, born at Lexington in 1940, the Vikings center who started all 240 regular-season games of his career and entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015. And Ben Kuroki, born at Gothenburg in 1917 to Japanese immigrant parents — the Second World War airman whose story became the documentary Most Honorable Son. Robert Henri grew up in Cozad, the town his father founded, but sources place his birth in New York or Cincinnati, not Nebraska.
