Kearney County is a rural agricultural county in south-central Nebraska, centered on Minden, the county seat. The county spans rolling plains between the Platte River valley to the north and the Republican River drainage basin to the south — some of the most productive agricultural land in the central plains. Kearney County is home to Harold Warp's Pioneer Village in Minden, one of the most comprehensive private museum collections in the United States.
Kearney County was formally organized in 1860, with Lowell serving as the first county seat before the seat relocated to Minden in 1878. The county remains largely rural, with six communities — five incorporated villages (Minden, Axtell, Wilcox, Heartwell, Norman) and one historically significant unincorporated community (Lowell) — spread across its agricultural landscape. License plate: #52.

History
A point of confusion worth clearing up first: Kearney County and the city of Kearney are two different places. The county lies south of the Platte; the city is across the river in Buffalo County and took its name secondhand. Both are named for Fort Kearny — spelled with one “e” — which stood in what is now Kearney County.
The county was created in 1855 and organized in 1860. Fort Kearny, established in 1848, was the first western military post built to protect emigrants on the trails west, sited where the feeder trails from the Missouri merged into one road running 330 miles to Fort Laramie. It was also a Pony Express station. Minden became the county seat, and its Harold Warp Pioneer Village is the county’s best-known attraction.
Geography
Kearney County covers about 516 square miles of south-central Nebraska, bounded on the north by the Platte River. The land is level to gently rolling loess plain, farmed intensively, with Rainwater Basin playa wetlands scattered through the south. It borders Buffalo County across the Platte to the north, Adams County to the east, Franklin County to the south, Harlan County to the south-west and Phelps County to the west.
Outdoors — Camping, RV, Hunting & Fishing
Kearney County’s outdoor calendar has one enormous event in it: the sandhill crane migration on the Platte. The rest of the year it is a quiet camping and waterfowl county.
Camping and RV
Fort Kearny State Recreation Area, 2199 30 Road — in Kearney County, despite a Kearney 68847 mailing address. About 100 campsites in two campgrounds: East is Electric Plus only; West has Electric Plus, Electric and Basic. Dump and fill station on site, with water at the dump station. Coin-operated showers, modern restrooms, vault toilets and drinking water throughout. Mature cottonwoods, some over a century old, shade much of the camping area.
Open year round, but expect showers, modern restrooms and the dump station to be shut mid-October through April. One camper notes water can be limited during crane season — which is precisely when the place is busiest. Half the electric sites are reservable up to 180 days ahead; the rest are first come, paid at an iron ranger taking cash or cheques only. Park entry permit required.
Harold Warp Pioneer Village Campground, 224 East US-6 at Minden — 50-amp and numerous 30-amp hookups, pull-through and back-in, sewer at some sites, showers, restrooms and free Wi-Fi, next to the museum. Fees and season are not published; ring (308) 832-1181.
Be careful with listings: the commercial RV parks called “Kearney” are in the city, across the river in Buffalo County.
Fishing
Fort Kearny SRA has seven pit lakes totalling 21 acres, holding bluegill, channel catfish, crappie and largemouth bass, with rainbow trout stocked into Lake 6 in spring. Accessible fishing decks on Lakes 6 and 7.
There are no boat ramps and no docks — boating is non-powered, no-wake, so bring something you can carry. A designated swimming beach at Lake 7 operates 10am to 8.30pm from Memorial Day to Labor Day. A park entry permit is required in addition to a fishing permit. The Platte along the north edge gives channel and flathead catfish; it is a braided, shallow, wade-and-bank river here, not a boating one.
Hunting
Kearney County holds nine federal Waterfowl Production Areas totalling about 2,874 acres — the largest are Prairie Dog (892 acres), Gleason (570), Jensen (465) and Clark (451). These are U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service ground, not state WMAs, which is why they are absent from Game and Parks’ list. All are open to public hunting; a federal duck stamp and non-toxic shot are required alongside Nebraska permits.
Waterfowl first, with pheasant and quail on the upland margins and whitetail on the larger tracts. Bassway Strip WMA, often assumed to be part of Fort Kearny, is in Buffalo County across the Platte channels — and it is closed to target shooting.
The crane migration
Migration runs mid-February to mid-April, peaking from early March to early April, with the third week of March strongest. Over a million sandhill cranes stage on the central Platte, and up to 20,000 roost nightly in the river reach off the Fort Kearny hike-bike bridge. Best viewing is the half hour before sunrise and the half hour before sunset.
In Kearney County, free and unbooked: the Fort Kearny hike-bike trail bridge, about a third of a mile from the car park, crossing Platte channels on converted Union Pacific railroad bridges. No blind and no reservation — but a state park entry permit is required to park. Keep voices low, move slowly, wear dark clothing and use no flash. The bridge rehabilitation was completed in February 2026.
Every bookable blind is outside Kearney County — Rowe Sanctuary at Gibbon and Windmill SRA are in Buffalo County, and the Crane Trust at Wood River is in Hall County. Those tours require advance booking and sell out.
Trails
The Fort Kearny Hike-Bike Trail runs 1.8 miles from the park north across the Platte to Bassway Strip, with a further 13.2 miles on to Cottonmill Park at Kearney. There is a nine-hole disc golf course at the recreation area, and equestrian trails at the historical park.
Fort Kearny State Historical Park, 1020 V Road, has no camping — campers use the adjoining recreation area. Reconstructed stockade, parade ground, powder magazine and blacksmith shop, with about forty acres of walking paths. The interpretive center charges $5 for adults on top of a park entry permit, and runs by appointment only from early October to early March.
Events
The Kearney County Fair at Minden anchors the summer, and Minden’s Christmas Light Display on the courthouse square is a long-standing tradition. But the county’s great annual event is natural: the sandhill crane migration from mid-February to mid-April.
Dates move year to year, so they are kept with the listings rather than repeated here.
