Kearney, Nebraska

Kearney is the county seat of Buffalo County and the largest city in south-central Nebraska, sitting along Interstate 80 about a mile north of the Platte River. As of the 2020 census, Kearney had a population of 33,867, making it the fifth-most populous city in Nebraska.

History

The area was first settled along the Mormon and Overland trails in the late 1840s, when the U.S. Army established Fort Kearny in 1848 to protect westward migrants; the fort later served gold-rush travelers and Pony Express riders before closing in 1871. The first permanent settlement, known as Dobytown, sat about two miles southeast of the present city. Kearney was incorporated on December 3, 1873, and became the Buffalo County seat in 1874. According to local history, the extra "e" in the city's name was added by mistake after repeated misspellings by postal workers, distinguishing it from the fort's original "Kearny" spelling.

Kearney sits at the junction of Interstate 80, U.S. Highway 30, and Nebraska Highways 10 and 44, making it a major travel hub for south-central Nebraska. The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument spans I-80 at the city's edge, tracing the history of westward migration along the corridor.

Nearby Towns

Kearney is surrounded by several smaller Buffalo County communities, including Gibbon and Shelton to the east, Amherst to the northwest, and Odessa to the north. Grand Island lies about 40 miles to the east along I-80.

Points of Interest

Kearney is one of the best-known viewing points for the spring Sandhill Crane migration along the Platte River, drawing visitors from around the world to see hundreds of thousands of cranes stage in the area each March. The University of Nebraska at Kearney, founded in 1905 as Nebraska State Normal School, anchors a 235-acre campus with more than 37 buildings.

Major employers include CHI Health Good Samaritan, the University of Nebraska at Kearney, and Baldwin Filters, a major manufacturer. The Buckle, a national clothing retailer, is headquartered in Kearney. The city is served by CHI Health Good Samaritan and Kearney Regional Medical Center, giving the region two full hospitals.
