About Nelson

Nelson is the seat of Nuckolls County, a city of 456 on NE 14 near the center of the county, on the south slope of the Elk Creek valley about 12 miles north of Superior. It has the county courthouse, the county fairgrounds, Lawrence-Nelson's middle and high school, and a Brodstone clinic.

History

Nelson was chosen county seat in 1872 over Elkton and Vernon, and the town site was surveyed the following winter. It was named for its owner, Nelson Wheeler of Peoria, Illinois (the city gives his name as Horatio Nelson Wheeler; early histories call him C. N. Wheeler). The post office opened in January 1874, the first school was taught in 1875, and the Nuckolls County Herald began in 1877. In 1882 Nelson still had no railroad, but by 1890 it was on both the Burlington's Edgar branch and the Rock Island's branch from Fairbury. In May 1883, 56 citizens petitioned to incorporate the village, and Nelson became a city of the second class in 1909.

Superior opposed two courthouse bond issues in the 1880s, but on July 30, 1889, voters approved $35,000, and the Classical Revival courthouse by architect George E. McDonald was accepted in December 1890; it was listed on the National Register in 1990. In 1899 William Stansbury, then 80, put up a brick building on Main Street whose north wall carries twelve life-size sandstone faces and two owls carved by James T. Donahoo of Edgar, among them local characters, Admiral Dewey and Theodore Roosevelt. In 1912 the P.E.O. Sisterhood raised the money for a concrete walkway about 1,235 feet long across a ravine to the cemetery. The population peaked at 978 in 1900 and 1910. Major-league outfielder Russ Snyder, born at Oak, graduated from Nelson High School in 1952.
