Hardy is a village in Nuckolls County in southern Nebraska. The 2020 census counted 97 residents. The village covers about 0.61 square miles and sits near 1,570 feet above sea level. Superior lies about seven miles west, and the Kansas state line is less than a mile away. The post office opened in 1880. The ZIP code is 68943.
History
The townsite was surveyed in the spring of 1880 on land held by the Lincoln Land Company, a firm tied to Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad officials. The railroad was laying its main line west at the time, and the town was named for a railroad official. Growth was quick enough that Hardy incorporated by the autumn of that same year. The first issue of the Hardy Herald was printed on 13 August 1880.
Since then
Hardy counted close to 500 residents by 1910, its high point. A three-storey brick high school went up in 1912. The original schoolhouse was torn down in 1919 and its materials reused for a community hall. Population has fallen steadily in recent decades: 179 in 2000, 159 in 2010 and 97 in 2020.
