About Angus

Angus is an unincorporated community in Nuckolls County, in south-central Nebraska. It lies about seven miles south of Edgar. There is no village government. Angus was once incorporated, but in 1970 the seventeen eligible voters who were left voted unanimously to give up that status.

History

The town dates from 1886, when the post office at Ox Bow was moved to the new townsite on the Burlington branch line. It was named for J. B. Angus, a railroad official. By 1912 Angus had a bank in a good brick building, stores, a hotel, a livery stable, a hardware shop and two churches. The post office closed on 18 July 1975.

The car factory

The name of Angus was once widely known for the Fuller automobile. Charles M. Fuller built a factory at the east edge of town, and more than six hundred cars were produced there in the years around 1907 to 1909. Fuller left the company after a business dispute and the works soon folded. From the early 1920s to the later 1940s the town also kept a cement swimming pool just east of town, the first cement pool in Nuckolls County.

Angus is an unincorporated community about seven miles south of Edgar, established in 1886 when the “Ox Bow” post office relocated to the new townsite along the Little Blue River and named for a Burlington & Missouri Railroad official. By 1912 Angus supported a bank, hotel, lumberyard, and multiple stores, and was home to the Fuller Automobile Company, which built over 600 cars between 1907 and 1909. Angus voted to disincorporate in 1970, and a sod house built in 1967 still marks Nebraska's statehood centennial.
