South Bend, Nebraska
South Bend is a village in Cass County, Nebraska, first settled in 1856, platted in 1857, and incorporated on December 2, 1885. Its population was 92 at the 2020 census. The village takes its name from a sweeping bend of the Platte River near the townsite.
History
The Burlington & Missouri River Railroad reached South Bend in 1872, and the community grew as a small rail-served river town. In 2004, a pedestrian bridge was built reusing the abandoned foundations of a former Rock Island Railroad bridge, connecting South Bend to nearby Schramm Park State Recreation Area. The BNSF main line still carries roughly 35 trains a day through the village.
