Gretna was platted in 1887 by the Lincoln Land Company after the Burlington Railroad's Omaha-to-Ashland line bypassed the older trading post of Forest City, and was incorporated on July 10, 1889. Its name recalls Scotland's Gretna Green, honoring the heritage of some of the area's earliest settlers.
One of the fastest-growing communities in the Omaha metro, Gretna's population has surged from 5,083 at the 2020 Census toward more recent estimates approaching 9,300, driven by new residential and retail development in the area.
