About Chalco

Chalco is an unincorporated suburb and census-designated place of 11,064 people (2020) in northern Sarpy County, on the Douglas County line west of La Vista, near NE 50 and I-80. It uses Omaha addresses (ZIP 68138). Chalco Hills Recreation Area and Wehrspann Lake lie just southwest.

History

Chalco began on the Burlington's Omaha–Ashland cutoff, built in 1886, and is thought to be named for Chalco, Mexico. Its post office ran from 1888 to 1950. In 1890 the village had about 50 people, with a station agent, a general store, a hardware store, an implement dealer, two blacksmiths and two saloons.

Suburban growth reached Chalco in the late 20th century, and by 2000 it had 10,736 people. The Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District opened Chalco Hills Recreation Area, with the Corps of Engineers' Wehrspann Lake, in 1988. The Voss Mohr Cemetery, once also called the Chalco Cemetery, is on Harrison St. at 138th St.
