About La Vista
La Vista is a city in Sarpy County and a suburb of Omaha. The 2020 census counted 16,746 residents, which made it the twelfth most populous city in Nebraska. The city covers about 3.28 square miles. Omaha and Ralston lie to the north, Papillion to the south, Bellevue to the east, and Interstate 80 runs along the west side.
History
A developer laid out the place in 1959 with a plan for 335 houses priced at 9,999 dollars each, which earned it the nickname the House of Nines. The first families moved in during January 1960. La Vista incorporated as a city on 23 February 1960. The name is Spanish for the view. Early residents chose it for the outlook over the Big Papio Creek basin south-east of the first development.
Schools
Most of the city is served by the Papillion-La Vista school district, which operates elementary schools, a junior high and high school facilities here.
Today
The 2020 census put the median age at 36.2 years. About 11.1 per cent of residents identified as Hispanic or Latino. The city has an ongoing City Centre redevelopment project.
