About La Vista

La Vista is a city of 16,746 in northern Sarpy County, between Omaha and Ralston on the north and Papillion on the south, with I-80 on its west side. It has the La Vista City Centre district and The Astro, the public library and community center, and Papillion La Vista Community Schools.

History

In 1959 a developer laid out 335 houses priced at $9,999, with $99 down and $99 a month, and La Vista became known as the "House of Nines." The first families moved in in January 1960, and the city incorporated on February 23, 1960. Its name is Spanish for "the view," for the view over the Big Papio Creek valley. The railroad hamlet of Portal had stood just to the west.

La Vista grew to 9,588 people by 1980 and 16,746 in 2020, its highest count. City Centre, begun in 2017 on a former golf course with help from a voter-approved half-cent sales tax, added apartments, shops and a 34-acre park, and The Astro, an indoor theater and outdoor amphitheater, opened there in 2023. The city's Salute to Summer festival became La Vista Days in 2025.
