About Grant
Grant is the county seat of Perkins County, in south-western Nebraska near the Colorado line. The 2020 census counted 1,197 residents. The elevation is about 3,416 feet. Perkins County is the easternmost county in Nebraska that keeps Mountain time, so Grant runs an hour behind most of the state.
History
The town was platted in 1886, when the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was extended to that point. It is named for Ulysses S. Grant. Perkins County was organized the following year out of land that had belonged to Keith County, and was named for Charles Elliott Perkins, president of the Burlington. County population peaked in 1930 at more than 5,800 and has fallen since, as farming mechanised.

The Grant Commercial Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Grant is the government and commercial center for the farm country around it. More than ninety-five per cent of Perkins County land is in agriculture, mostly corn, wheat and cattle. The county has three other incorporated places: Elsie, Madrid and Venango.

The Grant Commercial Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, alongside the Perkins County Courthouse, a Classical Revival "County Citadel style" building completed in 1926-27 by architect J.F. Reynolds, featuring rusticated brick, Ionic columns, and a carved-eagle parapet. The Perkins County Museum, housed in a restored 1905 home, also preserves a relocated one-room schoolhouse originally located west of Brandon.
