About Elsie
Elsie is a village in Perkins County, Nebraska. It is small by any measure. The village covers 0.17 square miles, and the 2020 census counted 102 people. That was down from 106 in 2010 and 139 in 2000. Madrid lies about seven miles west and Wallace about eleven miles east. Grant is roughly seventeen miles west, and Paxton about nineteen miles north.
History
Elsie was established in about 1887, when the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was extended to that point. The post office opened in 1887 as well. The village is named for Elsie, the daughter of Charles Elliott Perkins, who was president of the Burlington. Naming a new station stop after a railroad executive's family was ordinary practice on the line.
The street grid
The railroad's hand is still visible in the town plat. Several of Elsie's streets were given railroad names: Burlington, Chicago, Perkins and Quincy. A visitor reading the street signs is reading the company that put the town there in the first place.
