About Johnson County

Johnson County lies in southeastern Nebraska, crossed from northwest to southeast by the Big Nemaha River in a valley about 2 miles wide, with the Little Nemaha across the north. Its boundaries were drawn from western Nemaha County in 1857, the year Tecumseh was made county seat; a rival town, Kingston, contested it in 1858 but lost. Early settlements included Helena, Vesta, Spring Creek and Latrobe.

The Atchison & Nebraska Railroad reached Tecumseh in 1872 and founded Sterling and Elk Creek; a Burlington line from Nemaha City built through Tecumseh, Vesta and Crab Orchard in 1882–83; and the Missouri Pacific founded Cook in 1888. The county counted 11,197 people in 1900. Tecumseh State Correctional Institution opened in 2001, and NioCorp plans a niobium mine near Elk Creek.
