About Helena
Helena was a town in northern Johnson County, about 4 miles west of Cook near the Otoe County line. The Helena Cemetery remains; the map point is the cemetery.
History
Settlers arrived almost as soon as the county was organized, and a post office and a school existed by 1857. A bridge over the Nemaha was built in 1860 with help from Nebraska City, and Solomon Gould opened a sawmill in Helena precinct in 1864. W. L. Dunlap surveyed the town site in 1867 for George P. Tucker, B. F. Lushbaugh and Charles Dorsey, and Presbyterian and Lutheran churches were built in 1870.
The Atchison & Nebraska Railroad passed 6 miles away in 1872, and Helena was almost deserted by 1873; about 50 people lived there in 1882. When the Missouri Pacific founded Cook in 1888, it bypassed Helena again, and the town disappeared.
