About Burr
Burr is a village in Otoe County, in south-eastern Nebraska. It is one of the smallest incorporated places in the county. The 2020 census counted 52 residents, following 57 in 2010 and 66 in 2000. The whole village covers 0.09 square miles, all land. The centre of town is the corner of Fourth and Main.
History
A post office opened here on 15 July 1869 under the name Burr Oak, after the oak groves near the original site. The spelling later ran together as Burroak, and the railroad shortened it to Burr to avoid confusion with Burr Oak, Kansas. Surveyors ran a line through this part of Otoe County in 1886, grading began in 1887, and the first train arrived in September 1888. The town site was platted on land owned by Winfield and Sarah Holden.

By 1888 Burr had a hotel, a saloon, a hardware store, a general merchandise store, a lumberyard and two grain elevators. The American German Bank was organised in 1892 and was renamed The American Bank on 18 April 1919. The Easter tornado of 1913 destroyed the Hopewell Presbyterian Church. The population peaked at 133 in 1920.

Burr is a village platted in the 1880s when the railroad was extended to that point, and named for the burr oak trees near the original townsite. One of the smallest incorporated villages in Nebraska, Burr is the hometown of Dean Steinkuhler, the 1983 Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award-winning Nebraska Cornhuskers offensive lineman who went on to play in the NFL with the Houston Oilers.
