About St. Mary
St. Mary is an unincorporated community in Johnson County on NE 41, about 5 miles east of Sterling and 6 miles northwest of Tecumseh. Its Church of St. Mary is a mission of St. Andrew in Tecumseh.
History
The settlement grew up on the Atchison & Nebraska Railroad as Smartville. In 1885 it had a post office, with Robert Smart as postmaster, and a three-story grain elevator, and in 1890 it had about 60 people. That year 20 Polish families founded the Catholic church of St. Mary, and the community took the church's name; St. Mary still had a post office in 1912. The church was restored in 2019 and is still in use.
