Vesta, Nebraska

Vesta is an unincorporated community in Johnson County, in southeastern Nebraska, seven to nine miles west of Tecumseh depending on which account you follow.

History

Vesta was laid out as a town in the nineteenth century and named by a schoolteacher after a former student in Massachusetts. Fanning and Hall put up a steam sawmill here in 1866, and the settlement grew into a business point with stores, mechanics shops and a schoolhouse. The 1862 school census counted 45 school-age children at Vesta. It was one of the seven precincts of Johnson County and one of its nine post offices.

Location and Access

U.S. Highway 136 passes Vesta between Crab Orchard and Tecumseh. The community carries the ZIP code 68380 and sits at about 1,230 feet. Its streets are gravel.

Points of Interest

There is no museum or marked attraction here. What survives is the town site itself, the cemetery and the precinct name, in a stretch of well settled farming country that has been worked since the 1860s.
