About Inman
Inman is a village in the Elkhorn River valley of eastern Holt County, about 8 miles southeast of O'Neill on US 20 and US 275, which share the road here. The Cowboy Trail runs through town, and trail users may camp in the city park.
History
Inman takes its name from William H. "Bill" Inman, a pioneer storekeeper. In May 1877 he applied for a post office called Inman's Grove at his home. When the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad (later the Chicago & North Western) built west up the Elkhorn valley, grading began in the spring of 1880, and the town was platted north of the tracks in 1881. On August 19, 1881, the post office dropped "Grove" from its name and moved into the new town. Inman became an incorporated village in January 1914.
Hay built the town. Inman was the main market and storage point for baled hay from the South Fork valley meadows, and residents of the day believed it was the largest hay shipping point in the world. Several newspapers came and went, starting with the Inman Review in 1883.
The Inman Methodist Church was organized in September 1881 with 36 charter members. Beginning in 1949, its members raised money by haying 115 acres of the Knapp meadow. Charles Morsbach planted the town's first tree, a cottonwood, in 1880; it was still standing in 1976.

Holt County's first courthouse

Just north of the post office stands a small log structure known locally as the original Holt County courthouse. It was built when the new county needed a building to hold its records, which is why it is so small. A photograph of the Inman structure hangs in the hall of the present Holt County Courthouse in O'Neill.
