Broadwater was founded in 1909 as the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad expanded through the North Platte Valley, and is named for a "General Broadwater," reportedly a friend of a railroad official. The town sits less than a mile north of the North Platte River, about 15 miles southeast of Bridgeport, and is near the site of the 1865 Battle of Rush Creek, an engagement between U.S. Army troops and Cheyenne, Lakota Sioux, and Arapaho warriors fought roughly 4 miles southeast of town.
