The Ancient Bluff Ruins are three eroded buttes on the north side of the North Platte River. English converts in Brigham Young's 1847 pioneer company named them, because they reminded them of the ruined towers and castles of home. On Sunday, May 23, 1847, leaders climbed the highest bluff, which Orson Pratt measured at 235 feet above the river, and wrote their names on a buffalo skull. A National Park Service wayside on the Mormon Pioneer Trail tells the story, and the pullout also has a historical marker for missionary Narcissa Whitman, who passed in 1836. Trail ruts are nearby.
Visiting: the pullout is on the north side of U.S. 26 / Highway 92, about 6 miles west of Lisco and 8 miles east of Broadwater. The bluffs themselves are on private land; view them from the pullout and do not enter the property. No fee.
