Dalton is a small Cheyenne County village that emerged around 1900 when the Nebraska, Wyoming and Western Railroad extended its line north from Sidney, with a post office following in 1902.
Curiously, the true origin of Dalton's name has never been settled — historians point to three competing theories: Dalton, Massachusetts; an early settler named Patrick Dalton; or a Burlington Railroad official also named Patrick J. Dalton. The town once supported two newspapers, the Dalton Herald and the Dalton Delegate, and in 1978 its school district merged with neighboring Gurley's to form Leyton Public Schools.
