McCook Nebraska 69001

McCook is the county seat and largest city in Red Willow County, Nebraska, platted in 1882 when the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad extended service to the site. Named for Union Army Civil War general Alexander McDowell McCook, the city became the county seat in 1896, displacing the original seat at Indianola after the railroad chose McCook as its division point.

Home to 7,446 residents at the 2020 Census, McCook is known for its Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Harvey P. Sutton House — the only Wright residence built in Nebraska — and as the hometown of longtime U.S. Senator George W. Norris, architect of Nebraska's unicameral legislature. McCook Community College, founded in 1926, was Nebraska's first two-year junior college.
