Surprise, Nebraska
Surprise is a village in Read Township, Butler County, Nebraska. With a population of just 37 residents (2020 census), it is one of the smallest incorporated villages in the county, though it once boasted a population of roughly 350 in the early 1920s.
History
Surprise was founded in 1881 when George Miller built a gristmill on the Big Blue River. Miller was reportedly "pleasantly surprised to discover that so much waterpower was available" near the river's headwaters at that spot, and the name stuck. A post office opened in 1883, and the town plat was officially registered in 1884. A railroad depot followed in 1887, though the rail line was abandoned in 1942.
At its peak in the early 1920s, Surprise supported a population of around 350 and was home to Chautauqua Park, which hosted week-long cultural and educational assemblies drawing crowds of up to 1,500 people. The Surprise Opera House, built in 1913, still stands today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The village's school operated through 12th grade until it consolidated with a neighboring district in 1953, and its post office closed in 1988.
Surprise is the hometown of Eva Greenslit Anderson (1889–1972), an educator, author, and politician.

Surprise's population has declined steadily from its early-20th-century peak, standing at 44 in 2000, 43 in 2010, and 37 in 2020. Despite its small size, the village retains a strong sense of local history, anchored by the historic Opera House.
